Review: After Savette’s kidnapping and Leng taking off after her at the end of The Dark Prince, I just had to pick up The Ruby Isles straight away. Amel is having a tough time being heard among those of a higher rank and it seems in terms of suspicion, more people are suspicious of her especially after the Prince mentions her by name and asks to speak with her as she has no ties to the Dominion unlike Starie and she is deliberately being kept apart from Amel. However, Raolcan can get inside Starie’s head if Amel can get her close to her dragon, but all the while she is aware that Starie will be offered as the chosen bride if Savette is not recovered which is exactly what she wants. On top of all this in less than a month, Amel is going to be moved up a rank despite not being ready for it as dragon riders will be needed if it comes to war.
Amel is being drawn deeper into the Dominion’s politics as Prince Raktaran asks her if Starie is trustworthy as a bride and Amel knows she isn’t and he gives her three days to return Savette to him or he will kill her and Raolcan. Her superiors have also threatened her if she does anything to disrupt the wedding as it is important to the nation by severing her bond with Raolcan and forcing her to watch him die. Desperate she convinces Starie to meet with her and Raolcan manages to get Savette’s location but he is still bound to the stables which they need to release before they can rescue Savette, but at least for the meantime she doesn’t have to worry about Starie while the Prince’s attention is on her. After passing her exams and learning Savette’s location, another in her knot gives her the information she needs to free Raolcan and immediately the pair are off heading to Vanika. However, her friend join her in the rescue mission praying they won’t be kicked out of the school when they return but getting into the city is going to be hard as it is protected by dragon riders but Amel is determined to save her friend before Starie can marry the Prince.
With the help of her friends they manages to get into Vanika and find out where Savette is and Amel sees Leng also entering the same place. That night they are planning to rescue Savette and return to the Ruby Isles but remembering my previous reading of this book, they are going to be betrayed by Artis as she didn’t want to come on the mission because she doesn’t have the same protection that Lenora does as she is of high birth but they are all taking the risk, so I don’t see what she is getting so wound up over especially when the end is close. The rescue mission for Savette goes both perfectly and horribly at the same time but Amel does manage to rescue them both, they are both badly injured. Leng has been tortured by the Magikas under the orders of the Dusk Covenant which were are hearing about for the first time and Raolcan notices that something is wrong with Savette’s mind but they are free now to return to the Ruby Isles.
