Title: The Secrets She Carried

Author: Keiko Yamada

Genre: Manga

Rating: ***

Review: The hotel where Erin works has finally found a buyer…but it’s her old flame and former boss, hotel mogul Cristophe Donakis. She was his devoted worker and passionate lover, but as soon as he’d had his fun, he left her high and dry. Now he has Erin’s back against the wall. He claims he has proof that she stole twenty thousand pounds from the hotel he’d trusted her to manage, and Erin can’t prove her innocence. He says he’s willing to keep quiet on one condition… He wants to spend one last weekend with her! While this may seem like a standard synopsis for a romance story Harlequin Mangas have always found a way to surprise me.

This was a standard romance story with a few twists thrown in. We learn that Erin and Cristophe were in a relationship and now he is trying to buy the hotel she works at and he intends to fire her straight away from stealing a lot of money from him. Erin can’t defend herself without giving away the identity of the real thief, so she keeps silent. However, Cristophe says she can keep her job if she has dinner with him, so she agrees. They begin talking about their relationship and he accuses her of cheating on him which she never did she was always faithful.

As the pair get closer, Erin can’t keep her feelings for Cristophe at bay, but his arrogant attitude helps. Eventually, the truth comes to light and Cristophe tries to make things right between them, but Erin has her children Logan and Nuala to think about. However, she doesn’t want to keep them from Cristophe as he is the children’s father and when she reveals this to him, he is happy and wants to marry Erin.

Before the marriage can take place Cristophe wants to inform his parents and he learns that his mother was behind everything and he is heartbroken. Erin now has the power to fix things which she does, she forgives Cristophe’s mother and even introduces them to their grandchildren. Even as the wedding approaches, Erin is still under the impression that Cristophe is only marrying her for the children’s sake and he tells her that he loves her, and she loves him too.
