Much like the male list, I want to mention that these are my opinions and I am limiting it to one character per book/series.
1. Hanna Donnelly from Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman – Hanna was an amazing character and out of the female characters featured in this series, Hanna was the one I could relate to the most. She was a normal teenager with some slightly different interests until her home is invaded and the true strength of her character is revealed. Kady and Ella come a close second but Hanna deserves the spot.
2. Mia Corvere from Nevernight by Jay Kristoff – Mia is honestly the most stabby, foul-mouthed, sassy bitch ever written and I swear she is my spirit guardian. I don’t think I can say much more about her, if you have read Nevernight then you know exactly what I am talking about.
3. Grimalkin from The Wardstone Chronicles by Joseph Delaney – I couldn’t write a list of my favourite female characters without including the witch assassin of the Malkin clan. She is honestly my favourite character in the whole series, especially after her relationship with Tom develops. I was disappointed with her spin off book as it didn’t pack the punch I was hoping for, however, she is still the strongest character in the series.
4. Tempest from The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte – This is a more recent read for me but I loved it and Tempest was a character that you fell in love with despite whole book taking place over the course of a single day. The themes of family and sacrifice are so well written that it is impossible for readers not to completely devour it in a single sitting.
5. Hetty from Wilder Girls by Rory Power – Hetty wasn’t my favourite character from Wilder Girls, that honour belongs to Byatt but Hetty went through the most development and her arc hit me the hardest so she takes this spot on the list.
6. Anna from Blood Countess by Lana Popovic – It was a real struggle to choose between Anna and Elizabeth for me and while Elizabeth’s ruthless nature was thrilling to read, it was Anna’s arc that sold me on this book, from her falling in love with the Countess, to her making excuses for Elizabeth’s behaviour and finally the rose tinted glasses coming off and her fighting to free herself from Elizabeth’s influence with her life intact.
7. Joanna Mason from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Out of all the female characters in this series, Joanna was the one I felt went through the most and was the most realistic in terms of her attitude and reactions throughout the series. Her struggle with addiction and PTSD in the later books was heartbreaking and devastating to read and she deserves to be here.
8. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter by J K Rowling – Luna was the character I connected with the most, next to Hermione but she also had a lot of struggles that the books didn’t really focus on, like her experiences with bullying from within her own house, the loss of her mother and the slight mental breakdown of her father as well as what she experienced during the war that would have left her emotionally scarred but she also has a resilience that you have to admire.
9. Mia Rose from Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton – Mia Rose was a wonderful protagonist to follow on her journey not only to find herself as well as following in love. The situation Mia finds herself in is hard but she never gives up and she is a character we can all aspire to be a more like in the future.
10. Selah from The Beholder by Anna Bright – The Beholder was a book I wasn’t expecting to like but Selah was adorable and cute in every way and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended and I am super excited for the second book and to see where Selah’s story goes.
