Book Review
Title: Tremble (Books 1-5)
Author: Laura Avery
Genre: Dark Romance
Rating: ****
Review: So all I knew about the Tremble series is that it follows Winter and Caden and it is an enemy to lovers dark romance series and the synopsis really had me hooked so I had to request the first five books in the series. Like my other reviews for multiple books in a series, I will be reviewing each book individually, although this series doesn’t have different names for each book but rather, they are numbered.
Book 1
We are introduced to Winter who is saving money to move away from her stepbrothers and go to college by working in the local bar when Caden makes an appearance after coming out of prison and we instantly know that these pair share a dark and complicated history.
Caden is an interesting character as he is charismatic, and definitely commands a room but also have a lot of confidence and anger inside him and he takes that out most often on Winter but in an almost D/s type of way. Winter, on the other hand, does seem to be quite strong but with Caden, she is very meek and submissive probably due to her obsession with Caden and some form of conditioning. Despite knowing that he is extremely dangerous she is drawn to him and bends to his will.
One thing I did find interesting about this first book is why Caden ended up in prison and while we don’t know that yet, we do know that most people including Caden blame Winter for getting him sent to prison despite the fact she maintains her innocence and seems to be a bit of a scapegoat within their community.
Book 2
After the ending of book 1, I couldn’t wait to up into book 2. We obviously, re-join Winter and Caden and their dark, gritty relationship. Caden’s perspective has given us some insight into his mind and even though he was out in jail for putting Winter’s stepfather in a coma and has a severe dislike for Winter, he still protects her from her stepbrothers and make sure everyone knows that she belongs to him and that they aren’t to go anywhere near her. I really wanted to know why Winter’s brothers treat her the way they do and how she ended up in the relationship she has with Caden and why he put Winter’s stepfather in the hospital.
At the end of book 2 we get some incident into Winter’s stepbrothers and stepfather and we learn that they are all planning to rape her when her stepfather is released from hospital in a month and five months before she can escape, and I think Winter already knows that the only person who can protect her from them is also the person trying to make her life hell; Caden. Book 2 for me was a lot more interesting than book 1 and I can’t wait to see where these characters and the story goes next.
Book 3
Book 3 opens from Caden’s perspective and slowly we are getting more information about why Caden went to prison and why he was targeting Winter’s family. It might be that Caden knows what Winter’s stepfather was planning to do with her.
As their relationship becomes more and more intense Winter often questions why Caden wants her this way when he supposedly hates her, and she often wonders the same about herself. The ending of Book 3 was amazing as we see Caden’s true possessive nature come it when he learns of what Winter’s stepbrothers have been doing to her.
Book 4
I really liked book 4 as it dropped all the external dreams and just focused on Winter and Caden’s relationship and how they function in their D/s style relationship. I really liked how Caden sort of dropped his hateful personality when it comes to taking Winter’s virginity.
The reason I rated this book so low was purely because of the cheating aspect of this book. It isn’t that I’m against cheating in novels it is just whether or not it serves a purpose. In some novels, the cheating is used to strengthen or destroy a relationship and I felt that it genuinely wasn’t needed here as Caden and Winter’s relationship is already extremely difficult. I will be reading book 5 but if the cheating element is played on heavily then I won’t be continuing with this series.
By the time we get into book 4 of the Tremble series I was so invested in Winter and Caden’s relationship that I found myself flying through them and wishing for more and more, and given this fact this series has 15+ books I am going to be happy for a while.
Book 5
Despite the cheating aspect brought in book 4, this book redeemed the series for me as we see Caden come to Winter’s rescue once more and their relationship is changing. However, when Winter realises her stepbrothers are up to something, she knows she has to leave in order to be free even if it means leaving Caden.
The ending of Book 5 actually broke my heart a little as Winter finally admits that she loves Caden but still chooses to leave him and I have a feeling that he will move heaven and Earth to get her back. When I have the opportunity I will be continuing with the series. If you like dark romance novels with D/s undertones, then I’d recommend this series.
