Twilight Vows by Shion Hanyū (Illustrator) & Maggie Shayne

Book Review

Title: Twilight Vows

Author: Shion Hanyū (Illustrator) & Maggie Shayne

Genre: Manga

Rating: *****

Review: So I didn’t know a single thing about this manga before I requested it, but the synopsis sounds interesting: “After graduating from college, Rachel is returning to her hometown. She’d lost her parents when she was young, and when she was still a child, her aunt and uncle decided to murder her for the insurance money. Fortunately, a beautiful man saved her life, promising her that she was not alone, that she had him. The man shared his name with a legendary vampire from the area, and when she grew up, Rachel decided she would seek out the enigmatic man who’d saved her life.”

We are introduced to Rachel who has been studying in America but has decided to return to her home country of Ireland however, she soon encounters the mysterious Donovan who she believes is the same man who rescued her as a child. It turns out that she is right, but Donovan is also a centuries-old vampire and despite trying the wipe Rachel’s memories, he can’t erase what is in her heart and so she stays close to him despite his best efforts to push her away.

As Rachel tries to piece together her memories, we see that nothing has diminished Rachel’s love for Donovan. The villagers almost allow history to repeat itself when they march on the castle to kill the “monster”, but Rachel saves his life and in return he saves hers. Now together they can be free and wander the night eternal. Artistically this was one of the favourites despite the very generic plot and characters.
