Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

A popular book or series that you didn’t like

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell – Now I have tried to read this book several times in different formats. The audiobook narrator was f*cking awful and that really fake English accent was so offputting. I tried to read it twice in physical form and ended up DNF’ing it around 100 pages because I was bored. I was onboard for the magical school vibe with a M/M romance but it was boring.

A popular book or book series that everyone seems to hate but you love

Now for this one it isn’t a series that people hate I just don’t hear many people talking about it outside of die hard fantasy readers and that is The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. The Way of Kings is absolutely divine but I think the 1000+ pages put people off reading it.

An OTP you didn’t like

Any of the original OTP’s from Harry Potter. Harry and Ginny – F*CKING AWFUL. Ron and Hermione – how the hell did they end up together? Neville and Hannah – WTF? Honestly, I would have paired Harry and Hermione as their personalities mesh much better than Hermione and Ron’s. I would have left Ginny with Dean, Neville obviously has to end up with Luna and while the movies make it seem so, the canon is that he married Hannah Abbot. Finally, I would have left Ron a bachelor as that lifestyle probably would have suited him.

A popular book genre you hardly reach for

Historical fiction – I can honestly say I have read 2 series in this genre that I liked and many more that I hated. The two I loved are The Gentleman’s Guide series and the Stalking Jack the Ripper series.

A popular/beloved character you didn’t like

Despite liking the series, I didn’t like the main character and that is Feyre from the ACOTAR series. To me, she is whinny, and for the most part of the first book wilfully ignorant and little stupid. In ACOMAF she does get better but that I think that is due to Rhys and the other’s more than her own personal development.

A popular author you can’t seem to get into

Cassandra Clare – EASY! I read The Mortal Instruments and it was meh at best but I hated TID and never read anything from her since.

A popular book trope you are tired of seeing

Friend to lovers and enemies to lovers – it’s boring. Now enemies to lovers I hate less than friends to lovers. Friends to lovers is always predictable I haven’t read a book yet with this trope that I haven’t seen coming a mile away. Enemies to lovers I can like but it has to stick to certain things, I hate it when the enemy the character is falling in love with immediately becomes a good guy because of it – I like it a lot more when the two characters are in a relationship but one stays good and the other stays bad because it adds more depth and tension to that relationship.

A popular series you have no interest in reading

Honestly, I’ll give anything a go once so I can’t say there is something I wouldn’t at least try to read but I do have one that I will never read and that’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before which just seems like a romance filled, angsty, teenage hormone saturated series that would just bore me.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

City of Bones – sorry Cassandra Clare! The first book in TMI series was bad, poorly written, flat characters and action that happens for the sake of happening, so the book is a chore to get through even though it is relatively short but the movie was interesting and I liked the humour inserted into it especially with Simon who was a majorly snubbed character in my opinion. However, The Shadowhunters TV show SUCKS!
