Username: Regenerated (Username #2) by Joe Sugg

Book Review

Title: Username: Regenerated (Username #2)

Author: Joe Sugg

Genre: Graphic novel

Rating: ***

Review: The opening to Username: Regenerated really ramped up the stakes after the events of the first book, it turns out Evie’s father developed Escape when she was just a baby and her mother was the guinea pig for testing it but the software gate collapsed trapping her mother within the world. Knowing that Evie and Mallory have entered the world and got out makes me think that Evie might be able to find her mother in the world and bring her home even if her father has now passed away.

Evie is struggling to move on after the events of the first book especially since she seems to have a major crush on the mystery man that helped her find her dad but with the app busted there is no way back so she begins to try and make thing work with Lionel agreeing to go to prom with him. She asks him if he can fix the app as her dad created it and she doesn’t know where to begin and he agrees but by accident she sends him a message meant for Mallory saying that she doesn’t want to be with or go to prom with him which really hurts Lionel. Despite the fact he begins ignoring her, he has fixed Escape and Evie soon finds herself returning to the only place that really feels like home for her now.

This book wasn’t as gripping as the first in my opinion, it was just as fast paced as I read it cover to cover in about 15 minutes but the stakes didn’t feel as high as they were in the first book. Evie gets back into Escape which has begun regenerating and the world is rebuilding itself but in the virtual home her father was staying in Evie finds diary entries telling her the story about her mother and she is determined to try and find her again which she does. She does this much more quickly and without nearly as much peril as she did when she was trying to find her father. Her mother has become used to this world taking in abandoned children and they act like her soldiers, so when the mystery man from the first book and his rebooted brute friend accidentally end up in the real world, the lost boys are sent after them to bring them back.

However, in the real world, the gateway code hasn’t been finished but once again Lionel comes to the rescue, by the time Evie has returned to her world with her mother there is a standoff taking place between the lost boy and the mystery man which ends with his friend being killed. This was sad but it didn’t really hold any emotional weight for me as nothing else was really happening. In the end Evie, Lionel and Mallory send back everyone from the virtual world including the lost boys and the mystery man but at the last moment her mother also chooses to return as that is where she feels at home once again leaving Evie alone. Overall, I didn’t like Username: Regenerated anywhere near as much as I enjoyed Username: Evie but I will reserve all judgement of this series until I have read the final book Username: Uprising.
