Book Review

Title: Username: Uprising (Username #3)

Author: Joe Sugg

Genre: Graphic novel

Rating: *****

Review: Username: Uprising is the final book in the Username graphic novel series and I was really excited to see the conclusion of this series. I really loved the first book but wasn’t that keen on the second, so this one will decide the overall rating I give the series. The opening of Username: Uprising was brilliant we learn after the events of the second book Knox, one of lost boys of Escape has managed to stay in the real world and is causing chaos with the plan to take over the world using his coded brothers and by creating a portal between the virtual world and the real one which spells disaster before we even start.

Knox using his stealth and skill manages to communicate with his brothers in the virtual world who overthrow Evie’s mother and take control. Using her knowledge of Escape they force her to create a portal between the world and they begin sending avatars through to cause destruction. The portal also acts as an EMP sending the whole world into a blackout meaning the real humans are now at a major disadvantage because our world relies on technology whereas the avatars using weapons like bows and arrows or brute strength to fight.

As chaos reigns over the real world Evie knows she needs to go Escape and rescue her mother, in an effect to stop both worlds destroying each other. When she gets there she finds just as much chaos in Escape as there is in the real world. She manages to free her mother but with the portal going into overdrive, they need to shut it down cutting off Escape from the real world possibly forever but it isn’t going to be easy. As things get worse in the real world after almost a month of darkness, the Government plans to forcibly shut down the portal right at the same moment Evie and her mother are stepping through. Unknown to them the shutting down of Escape is going to claim the lives of Evie and her mother and the ending sees us witness Evie’s funeral where they Government pardon her for disobeying orders and her cousin, Mallory, her maybe-boyfriend Lionel and her old crush Jasper are there too. Evie is now seen as a hero who taught humanity how to truly be human but as the funeral draws to a close we see Lionel has a message received status from Escape, meaning that even though the program was destroyed Evie and her mother might be living in there with the avatar of her father.

This was a great ending to the series as it really ramped up the stakes for the characters and had some major “deaths”. It also leaves a nice opening so if Joe Sugg continued the series he has a nice place to start, possibly with Lionel trying to rebuild the program in order to communicate with Evie. Or he could succeed in rebuilding the program and bring the whole family back as it has been shown that avatars can survive in the real world without any affect to themselves. I hope we get something more in the Username universe soon as I really enjoyed the series overall and would enjoy reading more.
