Title: Warring Promises (Dragon School #8)

Author: Sarah K. L. Wilson

Genre: YA/Fantasy

Rating: *****

Review: First Message ended with Amel joining the Lightbringers and another brief clash between them and the Dusk Covenant as Starie declares herself the chosen one from the prophecies which Amel doesn’t really believe in and I like how we are almost halfway through the series before the stakes were raised to this level. We pick the story up immediately where First Message ended as Hubric knocks Amel out to stop her going to rescue Leng, but the time she comes around they are hours away from Dominion City and Raolcan refuses to take her back. They eventually come across some Dusk Covenant agents carrying kidnapped Purple Riders to the Feet of the River. The riders tell them Baojang has invaded and the Magikas turned on them but their aim is rounding up the purple riders and they have Leng.

Amel immediately wants to go after him but Hubric refuses telling her their message is more important and they are duty bound to deliver it. Hubric is just as torn as Amel is but being older and wiser she has no choice but to trust him and hope that Leng can hold out until they get there but she is hurting and there is nothing Hubric, Savette or Raolcan can say to ease the hurt in Amel right now. As they approach the safe house they see it has already been attacked and many have died. Quickly they are attacked by an Ifrit but together Savette and Rakturan deal with it. However, Savette knows there is something they need at the Feet of the River and wants to head there but Hubric has messages to deliver and again refuses. That night both Savette and Rakturan leaves them and Findar, one of the riders they rescued steals Hubric’s messages and head in the direction of the Feet of the River meaning they have to go after him as they didn’t read the messages to deliver them.

Amel is very worried as they know a lot of Magikas have gathered at the Feet of the River and there is only two of them to fight them if they can’t meet up with Savette and Rakturan but their first priority is getting the messages back as they are for the Dominar and it could be devastating should the Dusk Covenant get their hands on them first. They meet up with a group of twenty red riders and convince them to help retrieve the messages but when they get close to the Feet of the River, they can see the Purple riders are being protected by a lot of Magikas that are using their ability to connect to their dragon’s minds to keep the Dominion soldier away. The leader of the Reds give Hubric a message for the Dominar meaning he has to leave Amel behind but he gives her a coded meeting place and swear to her he will meet her there. Amel is now alone with the Reds and has to fight not only to rescue Leng but also Savette and Rakturan as well as getting Hubric’s messages back from the Dusk Covenant.

Amel and the Reds ride first to free the Purple riders including Leng but there are traitors and Ifrits swarming from every side and despite all their efforts it seems like they are on the losing side of this battle. That is until hundreds of dragons emerge from every side and in all colours but these are bound dragons like Raolcan, they are free dragons coming to aid their Prince which Raolcan conveniently forgot to mention but Amel right now is just grateful for the help in hopefully turning the tide of the battle. Warring Promises is the first book where we see the war begin in earnest and we see Amel beginning to develop into a very capable dragon rider in her own right but she still has much to learn about the world around her which Hubric and Raolcan have been helping her with. Seeing the brief reunion between Leng and Amel was beautiful and I can’t wait to see this relationship develop further in Prince of Dragons.
