Title: We Need to do Something by Max Brook III
Genre: Horror
Rating: 3.75 Stars
I didn’t know anything about We Need to do Something before getting into it other than it was in my suggested horror reads so I decided to pick it up since I have been in the mood for horror and dark books lately. All I know is from the synopsis is that we are following a family on the verge of self-destruction finds themselves isolated in their bathroom during a tornado warning. We are introduced to Mel, her brother Bobby, and her parents, Robert and Dee. From the very beginning we can see things aren’t right with the family as they shelter from a tornado believing it to be just another storm. Robert is an alcoholic and his relationship with Dee is toxic at best and this immediately comes out but the children are able to temper the emotions of their parents. After hours of the storm raging outside they realise that a tree has fallen through their house as blocked the bathroom door in addition to the roof being ripped off.
The family who can barely stand each other’s company are now trapped together until someone decides to rescue them. Days pass and the family are beginning to worry about what is going to happen to them as their phones are dead and they have no food on hand. Mel only seems concerned about talking to her girlfriend, Amy and setting things right between them after they did something bad but we don’t find out what this is yet. After a few days pass, Robert is beginning to experience withdrawal symptoms which don’t make the situation any better but things begin to take a really strange turn her. At first it is a dog or dog like creature outside the door, shared hallucinations or psychosis from all the family members but things take a deadly turn when a rattlesnake gets into the bathroom. Despite the family’s repeated attempts to keep an eye on the snake it eventually disappears and they believe it has left, the family do discuss the fact that their parents are getting a divorce because Dee isn’t happy with Robert and she has been seeing someone else. However, everything is overshadowed when Bobby gets bitten by the snake and dies from its venom.
With the remaining family still trapped in the bathroom, Robert eventually begins to believe that the only way for them to survive is to eat Bobby but Dee won’t allow this. Melissa confesses about the ritual she and Amy performed and that she believes that everything is her fault, Robert tries to attack her calling her a witch and tries to kill her but Dee prevents this by attacking and killing Robert leaving only her and Melissa. After more time passes Mel and Dee need to find a way out and it seems her mother does but in the time Mel is alone Amy comes for her seemingly possessed and takes Mel with her before the whole story resets but Robert seems aware of what Mel has done. Overall, We Need to do Something was an interesting story but it was rather confusing in places but from what I understood of the story I did enjoy it.
