Woom by Duncan Ralston

Book Review

Title: Woom by Duncan Ralston

Genre: Horror

Rating: 4.75 Stars

I didn’t know anything about Woom before picking it up but it was recommended to me by Goodreads so I am going to check it out. It turns out that Woom is a play on words combining the words room and womb which are both relevant to the story but also it makes sense considering one of the quirks that Angel has within the story. I will warn everyone before picking this book up please check the triggers warnings as it is incredibly dark but I also found it strangely enduring as well. That could just be me and my fucked up way of thinking but double check before reading this book as it might take you by surprise especially with the twist at the end of the book.

We are introduced to Angel who has a history with Room 6 of the Lonely Motel as some of the darkest and most emotionally moments of his life happened in this room. He is returning to the room for one last time and hires a plus-sized prostitute named Shyla to help him on his journey. When Shyla arrives she finds Angel to be a polite and respectful gentleman and in terms of clients what he is asking for isn’t anything strange, in fact, it is relatively tame compared to other clients she has had but there is a reason behind this. Angel begins telling her stories which she believes are made up at first while he performs sexually acts on her with toys, although this has a reason behind it as well. These stories are dark and disturbing in places from a mother dying trying to abort her baby to a young girl mutilating her prom date to resemble to mannequin she feel in love with.

During these stories there is a lot of banter between Angel and Shyla but she eventually begins but the information together and realises that Angel or Johnny is present in every story and he is telling her about his life, from his mother trying and failing to abort him losing her own life in the process, to his girlfriend Beth mutilating him so badly he can’t even think of himself as a man anymore. Shyla was chosen by Angel for a reason as he wants to be reborn, literally, he is using the toys to determine if it is possible for him to put his head inside Shyla for her to birth him again and start over. It is possible due to surgery Shyla had to have as a young girl after being sexually assaulted and he drugs her and does it anyway despite her protests. Shyla comes around and realises that Angel isn’t breathing and births him. As someone who always wanted children this process sparks many emotions in Shyla and while she does hate Angel for what he did to her, she wants to protect him like any mother would with their child. Woom was a dark and disturbing read in places but I left it feeling strange because towards the end I found it be rather sweet like Shyla and Angel were completing something that was missing in the other and I am thoroughly confused by the conflicting emotions this book raised within me in less than 150 pages. Highly recommended.
