Title: Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otakus Vol 1 by Fujita

Genre: Slice of Life, Romance, Manga

Rating: 5 Stars

So I have watched all of the Wotakoi anime before and was extremely sad when it didn’t get a season 2 despite the manga continuing. The first omnibus volume follows the anime almost exactly as it was an extremely faithful adaptation and I couldn’t wait to rejoin my favourite characters on their respective romance journeys. We are following two couples beginning with Narumi and Hirotaka, who are childhood friends who end up working at the same office but Narumi is outed as an otaku to Hirotaka’s senpai, Kabakura and her own, Hanako bringing the four main characters together.

Initially Narumi moved jobs because she was outed as an otaku at work and her boyfriend dumped her shortly after but Hirotaka offers to be her boyfriend because she will get no judgement from him and he will end help her when she needs it so she agrees. We soon learn that Hirotaka has had feelings for Narumi for a long time and accidently confesses them to her which sends their romance from a business proposal to an actual one but the transition is awkward as it would be in real life which is something I adore about this series as it doesn’t skip over the awkward parts of a new romance.

On the other hand, Kabakura and Hanako have been together since high school although they try to discreet at work and definitely have a love/hate relationship in the way they show each other affection. Watching these four try to navigate romance, friendship and work was hilarious especially towards the end of the volume where we get introduced to Hirotaka’s younger brother, Nao who is the most adorable character by far. For anime, manga and gaming fans there are so many references in here like Gintama. Volume 2 is going to cap off where the anime left off and I can’t wait to see what I’ve missed out on by only watching the anime.
